I love the Apes film franchise, excluding the Burton remake. And to be honest the last real ape film, Battle for Planet of the Apes, is pretty horrible but the remaining films are stand-up. They each have their own qualities that make them special, my favorite being the first, Conquest thereafter, and the others can be put wherever you want them.
At any rate, the latest film probably slides into 3rd. Beneath was less about the apes and more about a nuke message and mutants and Escape was a bit over-done in the humor and 70’s goofiness. Rise of the Planet of the Apes doesn’t have a Heston or McDowall, but it does have Lithgow. While his role is limited it is the best in terms of human acting. Everyone else, apes aside, are rather dry. The CGI gets finicky at times but it isn’t enough to ruin. Caesar and his pals steal the show, as they should.
There are several references to the old franchise that are done without being annoying. It’s a film I’ll see again and probably need to.
